MILESTONES
Seven decades
in the industry have brought many milestones for
the company. Among the more memorable stories
within the halls of Malayan are the following:
1930
- Founding of China
Insurance and Surety Company with a capital of
P147,500.
1935
- Generated a total gross premium income of P41,399,
total assets of P392,709, or total revenue of
P434,108.
1940 - Generated
a total gross premium income of P713,976, total
assets of P402,272, or a total business of P1,116,228.
1949
- During World War II, China Insurance was inactive.
Resuming operations after the war, it shed off
its name and took the name Malayan Insurance Co.,
Inc.
1950
- Opened Cebu City branch and Luzon Regional Office.
1952
- Established Visayas and Mindanao Regional Offices.
1955
- Bankers and Manufacturers Assurance Corporation
was founded. On its Silver Anniversary, Malayan
Insurance Co., Inc. registered a gross premium
income of P2,198,000.
1956
- Established Eastern General Reinsurance Corporation,
the first reinsurance company in the Philippines.
1959
- Business Writers Association of the Philippines
(BWAP) recognized Malayan Insurance as the Insurance
Firm of the Year.
1960
- Pioneered the first personal accident insurance
vending machines in the Philippines - Flight (Travel)
Insurance Plan.
1964
- Organized Pan Malayan Insurance Corporation,
a joint venture with Tokio Marine and Fire Insurance
Co. of Japan, Continental Insurance Company of
the US and Malayan Insurance Co. of the Philippines.
1965
- Introduced the first Personal Accident Christmas
Card in the Philippine market. First Nationwide
Assurance Corporation was founded.
1970
to 1979 - Opened new
branches around the country. In Mindanao -- Cagayan
de Oro (1973), General Santos (1973) and Zamboanga
(1978); in the Visayas -- Bacolod City and Iloilo
City (1978); in Luzon -- Legaspi City (1976) and
Baguio City (1976). Expanded abroad, establishing
foreign subsidiaries, branches or agencies in
Europe and the Middle East (Belgium, France, Germany,
Holland, Greece and Kenya), America (US and Mexico)
and in Southeast Asia and the Pacific (Australia,
Bermuda, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia,
Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand). Acknowledged
as the Top Non-Life Insurance Company in the Philippines
by Business Day.
1980
- Established the first joint venture agreement
with Zurich Insurance Company of Switzerland -
Malayan Zurich Insurance Co., Inc.
1980
to 1982 - Received the
Bangko Sentral Ng Pilipinas Award for exemplary
contribution to the foreign earnings of the country
from non-trade transactions.
1983
- Mrs. Helen Y. Dee was elected President of Malayan
Insurance Co., Inc. For the next eleven years,
she spearheaded the company's domestic expansion
and modernization programs, leading toward innovative
developments in insurance products, manpower training
and skills, underwriting and support services.
These resulted in Malayan's assuming and maintaining
its No. 1position in the non-life insurance industry.
Malayan also became the first nationwide, full-computerized
insurance company in the Philippines.
1987
- Introduced car etching in the Philippines in
cooperation with the Philippine Motor Association.
1992
- Introduced the first Express Claims
Service in the Philippines, a one-stop fully computerized
claims processing service.
1995
- Opened a new branch in Kalookan and Service
Offices in the Cavite Export Processing Zone and
Subic Bay Freeport Zone.
1996
- Introduced the "Loss of Use" (LOU)
insurance cover, a unique additional motorcar
insurance cover, which provides the policyholder
with an additional benefit of transportation reimbursement
when the insured vehicle is not available for
use as a result of loss or damage.
1998
- Provided Malayan Comprehensive Motorcar Insurance
policyholders with a "Free" Membership
Road Assistance Program, CAMILLE, "Call Malayan
Insurance Live Line".
2000
- Became the first insurance company in the country
to be Y2K (Year 2000) compliant. Continued to
be the No. 1 and the largest non-life insurance
group in the Philippines.
2002
- Introduced the 1st valued insurance cover for
high-end big bikes, "Motorcycle 1".
2003
- Introduced the first daily travel insurance
that is conveniently available through SMS text,
"Text Insure" and "1 Peso a Day".
2005
- Launched the "Todo Asenso", a micro
loan insurance product in partnership with the
Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines (RBAP).
- Launched the "Cell Protect", in partnership
with Globe Telecom and the "TravelMaster",
a full protection travel insurance that responds
to various emergencies and assistance such as
accidents, medical services and recovery of lost
or delayed baggage.
