Avoiding accidents in the rainy season

by theloop | Sep 11, 2019

MANILA, Philippines – State weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has officially declared that the rainy season is here, and with it, risks abound everywhere we go.

Due to calamities caused by inclement weather, families are displaced, and businesses tend to move and produce at a slower pace. Schools suspend classes, offices are hard to get to, especially if roads get flooded. Just like the weather, our lives can be so unpredictable, we are prone to danger and accidents: slippery roads, low lying areas, intermittent rain that we have no way of predicting, and even landslides and falling trees.

In the Philippines, natural disasters account for the largest damage in terms of cost and loss, according to a 2016 report by the Philippine Senate Economic Planning Office. According to data from the Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) natural disasters that occurred in the Philippines between 2007 and 2016 have totaled to at least US$19.1 million worth of damage, with the peak being in 2013, which was when the destructive Typhoon Yolanda hit the central regions.

If you're a breadwinner and you provide for a family, or if you have assets that need protection, you might want to consider insuring your properties. Insurance is a type of risk management wherein your insurance insulates you from risks and effectively transfers it to another entity, such as an insurance company that is reliable and capable of responding to it, helping you recover from accidents.

A leading non-life insurance company in the Philippines, Malayan Insurance Co., Inc. (MICO) offers an affordable and flexible insurance plan called Malayan's HomeProtect Plus. The home insurance program includes coverage for typhoon and flood assistance cover, as well as other benefits that are not usually found in regular policies from other insurance providers, such as cost of cleanup benefits, electrical check-up due to typhoons and floods.

Alongside these main features, for instances wherein the insured property is severely damaged by flooding of typhoons and thus becomes inhabitable during the repair process, Malayan's HomeProtect Plus also covers the rent for the insured person's temporary shelter as an added benefit. This alternative accommodation benefit can provide for up to 15 days for the client, during the property's repair process.

For businesses, Malayan Insurance provides Malayan's Business Protect, which provides asset protection for various commercial businesses such as offices, restaurants and even small kiosks. This insurance program is scalable and can be customized according to your business' needs and designed for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

To secure your vehicles during the accident-prone rainy season, the company also offers Malayan's Automaster, a comprehensive insurance for automobiles. The coverage of Automaster, a wide-range car insurance policy by Malayan Insurance, includes protection in case of loss or damage to your car; personal accident protection for yourself and passengers; liability to other injured persons or damaged properties; extended coverage on damages caused by convulsions of nature/acts of nature (AON) such as typhoon, flood, and strong winds; reimbursable transportation allowance while your car is repaired; and more.

Malayan Insurance’s comprehensive motorcar insurance policyholders are also entitled to free membership to roadside assistance program called CAMILLE or Call Malayan Insurance Live Line by simply dialing the hotline number (02) 6878-525. CAMILLE gives free emergency towing service in Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, Metro Davao and other key areas nationwide, seven days a week.

In addition, Malayan's CAMILLE offers free minor roadside repairs up to P2,000, vehicle towing of up to P4,000 pesos FREE per incident and recovery of unit using a crane of up to P8,000 pesos FREE, free alternative travel and hotel accommodation arrangements, as well as emergency medical transport and hospital admission and other valuable road-related services.

To mitigate the financial impact of damage classified as acts of nature, it is important to insure property by availing of a comprehensive insurance plan that understands your needs and situation. From planning and preparing ahead for disasters and hazards, to making sure that your homes are always ready for emergencies, making decisions to always stay one step ahead of accidents is key to securing your property and family.
